Chain Scission is an ongoing series of work recently featured in the two-person exhibition Phase Change with Freyja Eilif at Gallery Kannski, Reykjavik.

The materials here show signs of their age through marks of time and wear. They have been reformed through weathering evident in their brittleness, creases, cracks, colouration, and opacity, having changed from initial states of rigidity, glossiness, ductility, or transparency.

The process of “chain scission” is one of the primary ways that plastics degrade over time. A polymer is a long chain of molecules which can break apart when exposed to long periods of sunlight and heat. The materials here are actively breaking apart and have long surpassed their desired “use” value. I am interested in how acts of saving, attention, and closeness, might complicate their relation to time. Could a material hold something only possible with age, akin to a kind of wisdom or warning?
